Subject: Please continue momentum to support WA students & workforce!

Message:

Washington students have big dreams, and our state’s economy is ready for them! But there’s a catch: A majority of job openings in WA will require a post-high school credential, such as a degree, apprenticeship, or certificate in a specific field such as medicine, technology, or manufacturing. Today, only 40 percent of our high school students are projected to complete such a credential by the time they’re 26 — that’s a 3 percentage point drop from two years ago. And the pandemic has exacerbated the existing crisis: compared to fall 2019, fall 2022 enrollment in WA declined by 70,000 or more students. The need is urgent. Please continue to build on the momentum from the past several legislative sessions to ensure Washingtonians have the opportunity to earn a credential or degree and succeed in tomorrow’s workforce. Prioritize strategies such as: high-quality career navigation and advising; expansion of career connected learning; increased financial aid application completion; and more capacity in high-demand degree and certificate programs. Public opinion polling from the College Promise Coalition shows Washingtonians agree that increasing credential attainment is a priority: • 79% agree that education beyond high school is necessary for success in today’s work world, whether a certificate, a 2-year career-training degree or a 4-year degree. • More than eight in ten Washington voters support the 70% credential attainment goal. Your support can get thousands more students per year – particularly students of color and students from low-income backgrounds – to and through post-high school education, a win for both our students and our state. Thank you!
